"Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace,
along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart" 2 Timothy 2:22, NIV.

Now, now, now, don't worry. I don't actually think sugar (or any food) is actually evil, but the effects it can cause, are certainly not angelic either.
I have had very, very, little sugar in the past 3 years, and when I have had it, I've regretted it. The aftermath of pain, inflammation, indigestion, and fatigue was never worth it--not once. I gave up sugar when I started a low-carb diet to ward of migraines (which worked, and which you can read about here). But the more I read and learn about food and the important role it plays in my well-being, the easier it has been to systematically purge the junk from my diet.
Before you think this is a "better than thou" confession, you should know I've not yet weened my little family off of the stuff. In fact, I "let" them enjoy some s'mores this evening. This is a rare treat around these parts though, since I don't keep sweets in the house, but I do let Celia indulge once in awhile. I think s'mores are kinda patriotic, eh?

But as I said, sweet treats are rare here at home, and I'm teaching Celia to read labels and think about what effects the food she's putting into her mouth will have on her body. (I'd like to have these conversations with a few of those cupcake-toting moms at school too! Ugh!)
I'm continually dumbfounded at how normal it has become to eat, eat, eat! Meeting? Food! Party? Food! And these cupcake shops popping up all over town?
What IS it with this infatuation? Well, it's addictive for one thing.
As addictive as COCAINE. Yikes. [source]
"In the last 20 years, we have increased sugar consumption in the U.S. 26 pounds to 135 lbs. of sugar per person per year! Prior to the turn of this century (1887-1890), the average consumption was only 5 lbs. per person per year! Cardiovascular disease and cancer was virtually unknown in the early 1900's." [source]
Can you just imagine those cupcake shops being swarmed by police just like a crack house? Double yikes. Step away from that cupcake, ma'am.

When I started this journey, I never anticipated how far, or how strict my diet would become, but I really look forward to finding out where it's headed. I'm not perfect by a long shot, and every change hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it.
My new and very simple goal is not to be the cause of my own afflictions.
Have a great, sugar-free day,
Kristi
