The Massacre, Part 2

Additional Woeful Events At the Castle

Our pekin ducks back in the spring

Since last week's post, I've had to mull all the things around in my head before writing a follow-up. Life sometimes takes more brainpower than I have to give.

In the grand scheme of things, losing livestock is NOT a BIG deal. Our lovely fowl were not expensive to lose. In fact, lost eggs are the only real, monetary/tangible loss, since they're all too old for eatin' anyway. They're not pets.

They're NOT. :(

The grief comes when you've gotten yourself so very incredibly attached to your feathered friends. Celia had named most of them, and though I still couldn't remember which was which, I sure have loved watching our little flocks waddle around the castle grounds in their wee little rows--our ducks were always in sweet little rows. They've been such wonderful entertainment and pest control! So the sadness follows below...

A brief synopsis of the aftermath...

We arrived home on the evening of October 11 (the night after the first event/previous blog post) to realize it was Celia's beloved duck, Eric, who sadly had been the decimated fowl the night before, and not, in fact, one of our older white chickens as we'd originally thought. This brought great distress, because we originally had high hopes of finding him having gone off and hidden. But it turned out he wasn't a scaredy duck after all and that he had indeed lost his life keeping the predator away from his wee harem.

What a champ he was after all!

And then there was the sadness of finding one of the injured Pekin (the big white breed) ducks in the coop had died from her injuries, and another was too injured to be saved. Final curtains for those two.

Now we have one male and one female (Pekin ducks) who are still confined to their quarters while they heal from their injuries. It will be sad to see them out and about on their own without the other two ladies.

*sigh*

But then the next morning when Celia went to let the ducks out for the day, she found one of the Indian Runner Ducks, Mags, out of the coop and scared and injured. She brought her inside in a panic. I went out to check the rest and found black feathers all about and only three ducks in the coop.

*double sigh*

Some awful creature had managed to open the side door of the coop and devour poor little Fili and injure poor Mags. Thankfully Mags somehow got free and seems to be healing okay from her injuries now.

Stupid ducks. :(

After all that sadness last week, Celia and I got to go to DFL (Designed For Life--our church's annual women's conference). It was wonderful. It's always good to be reminded of God's goodness--even and ESPECIALLY when life is hard and doesn't make sense. Life is hard enough without our birds being absconded with! But there is still SO MUCH to be grateful for.

There really is!

But then this week, sigh, my sweet Mr. Tibbs (tabby cat) has gone missing. I'm still praying for his safe return--he's always been quite the adventurer.

In other (good!) news, we still have all four of the chickens intact...although none of them are laying eggs anymore and are just little feathered freeloaders. At least they still eat bugs!

I'm very ready for a (hopefully!) quiet weekend with my kiddo while Jon's off hunting.

So be it.

TGIF, people.
